This textbook is designed for Slovak and Czech university students whose major is English. It offers a succinct to the segmental features (speech sounds) of General Ameracan (GA) phonetics. Presupposing no prior knowledge of the topic, the reader is introduced to basic phonetic terms, production of speech sounds, and then to the individual vowels and consonants of GA. Each chapter is accompanied by exercises and review questions. In addition particular chapters also highlight the essential defferences the two most widely taught English accents (BBC accent and GA accent), and provide the reader with fundamental information on pronuncation instruction A separate chapter discusses potential errors in English pronunciation, and includes a list of frequently mispronounced Wnglish words by Slovak and Czech learners, along with possible mispronunciation examples. The finalchapter contains an English-Slovak dictionary of key phonetic terms. The textbook will prove udeful to all teachers and students of English, even those who possess little or no knowledge of English phonetics, since the chapters include practical pronunciation examples of the topic they are concerned with.
